The objective of this review was to evaluate the available information about iron content and bioavailability in human milk, and present the results from studies on the possible influence of some factors related to the mother's organism (gestation length, nutritional status, dietary ingestion, iron supplementation, age and the use of oral contraceptives) upon variations in iron content and the factors responsible for the high iron bioavaliability in human milk. It is concluded that the iron content is kept adequate, independently of the woman's characteristics and habits, so the importance of the human milk is evident in preventing iron deficiency in suckling babies. Therefore, the woman's adequate nutritional status, specially in regard to iron, is greatly important to prepare the organism for the requirements of the lactation, thus avoiding a possible depletion of this nutrient.
